The graghic novel genre that provides greater depth of meaning through visualization and symbolism that cannot be portrayed by a text only novel. For this section of the project try to use symbolism, imagery, and allegory for your presentation
The class will be divided into four groups. Each group will be responsible for a PowerPoint graphic novel.
Part one:
For the first part of this project the entire group will work cooperatively on researching and producing the first three to five PowerPoint slides. For this first section imagine you are trying to persuade a school board or school administration that graphic novels are a serious and legitimate egory as well as elements portrayed in Maus and concepts presented by Scott McCloud to persuade your audience. For part one of this assignment I encourage you to use the web-links that I have provided for Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art. McCloud often refers to this genre as Comix because it is a CooperativeMixture of words and images. I have selected three videos two are about the novel Maus and one is about understanding comix.
Part Two:
For part two you will focus on a character and use your sense of empathy to analyze how would the character feel in this situation. Again, try to explain how their life and their relationship with the other characters are affected by Vladek’s holocaust experience. Use the elemnts of symbolilism, allegory, and imagery that we have been examining throughout this project.
Begin this section of the project by watching the videos below on SYMBOLISM in Maus
After watching the video about Maus, watch the video on Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics
It is amazing how one simple symbol (The Swastika) can carry so much meaning and weight. The image of the swastika juxtaposed with the image of “The Wandering Jew” provides a depth of thought and meaning that would be hard to replicate in a text-only novel. While Maus contains images and symbols in every panel the overarching symbol is that of nationalistic stereotypes represented by the depiction of animals; Jews as mice, Germans as cats and so on. Please keep the concepts of symbolism, imagery, and allegory in mind as you do research.
Use the following websites for research and produce three to five graphic novel style PowerPoint slides to persuade your audience that this genre can add depth and meaning to a novel that would be hard to replicate in a text only novel. The entire group will work on part one together so everyone can get comfortable with producing a graphic novel PowerPoint slide presentation.
